<p>Hypnosis is no more exotic or mysterious than dentistry. The only difference is we see a dentist on a regular basis throughout our entire life, but are much less likely to experience professional hypnosis, or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is a natural state that everyone experiences on a daily basis. At a minimum, you are in hypnosis twice a day. You pass through a hypnotic state as you fall asleep, and as you wake up. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While hypnosis is not a word we hear everyday, it is a word that many people seem to have a preconceived definition for.  The most common thought is that hypnosis is an altered state of mind that brings the subject to a trance like state. </p>
<p>The rest of the definition not quite as well known is subject is vulnerable to suggestions in order to change their lives.  When combined this is a correct assumption and a rather accurate description. </p>
<p>However hypnosis entails more than just the trance like state you see depicted in many movies and television shows, it is a deep and complicated relationship held between hypnotist and subject that comes complete with a desired set of goals to achieve. </p>
<p>Hypnosis is an altered state of mind.  When a subject is under hypnosis they are much more responsive as they experience their inner world the subject’s thoughts and ideas become more vivid and actionable through the art of suggestion and language. </p>
<p>The responsiveness in a hypnotic trance is much more sensitive than that of a normal state of being; thoughts and suggestions presented by you, the hypnotist, will become part of your subject’s inner world creating a pallet for you to work with and mold into the desired outcome. </p>
<p>This is important to remember, because as you sharpen your skills as a hypnotist you will always be affecting your subject, everything that becomes a part of your clients inner world will eventually become a part of their outer world as they put your hypnotic suggestions into action. </p>
<p>Another thing that hypnosis is is a very natural way of being, it is not magical or strange, and in fact many people spend a large amount of their days in hypnotic trances, as you learn to entrance people you will start to notice those around you who are experiencing hypnotic trances in everyday life. </p>
<p>An example of an everyday experience that can often result in a hypnotic trance is driving.  Many times we get behind the wheel and know where we started, and suddenly we are at our destination.  We don’t recall how we got there or any of the events that happened along the drive, this is a hypnotic trance. </p>
<p>The rhythms we are used to, such as the feel of the car, can relax us to the point that our subconscious takes over and does the work for use while we, excuse the term as many like to call it, ‘zone out’.  This may sound strange at first but when you really consider all the activities we do everyday we have been conditioned all through out our lives to enter hypnotic trances. </p>
<p>Have you ever watched a movie and later realized that the only thing in your mind and field of vision was a 15 inch screen, obviously you can see the rest of the room, people, cat and dog while focusing on the screen but the concentration and trance that is produced makes it seem as though the only thing that exists in the room is that little screen and the action it is producing. </p>
<p>Reading a book, we often get lost in the story and never realize what the ‘real world’ is doing around us. As you read you experience changing emotions, happiness, fear, suspense, sadness and tears.  This interaction with the words and information being relayed to your mind alters your state of mind and becomes a hypnotic process in itself. </p>
<p>This emotional response is unconscious, the changing of your emotions, ideas and life, is one of the fundamental and guiding themes when learning hypnosis.  You have no choice in your emotions, you do not get to choose how you feel about a thing, it is simply a conscious response by your unconscious mind as a reaction to the suggestions you are presenting to yourself. </p>
<p>Hypnosis can and usually will result from any repetitive task you enjoy engaging in.  Runners experience runners high, they alter their mind and experience a trance like state while their body works they feel healthy and alive.  Entering this altered state of mind is a form of self hypnotherapy which is a very powerful place to put yourself, and a powerful thing to be able to accomplish for yourself. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I had a conversation the other evening with a group of people who all work in the same firm and in which several colleagues had all lost significant amounts of weight and had kept it off. I asked how they had got started on this course of action. The answer, which everyone was in agreement with, was that one particular person had started to lose weight and was about 20 pounds lighter than before; everyone began to comment upon how good he looked and then one colleague said he would do it too&#8230;then the other&#8217;s said &#8220;if you&#8217;re doing it, I&#8217;ll do it too&#8221;. A reference was made to the &#8220;herd instinct&#8221;. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s how it all began. Everyone who joined this group has lost weight and kept if off &#8211; EVERYONE. Now that is, I have to say, unusual. Clearly the first person, the leader, inspired a great deal of confidence within the group. I do not know them well enough to know what dynamics were at work, but it is interesting to conjecture what might have happened&#8230;  </p>
<p>Perhaps this &#8220;weight loss leader&#8221; was someone who was particularly well respected in general, someone who everybody looked up to and tried to emulate. Perhaps this was not the case; maybe this &#8220;weight loss leader&#8221; was actually a REALLY overweight person, who had tried every diet under the sun and failed in the past, and in losing weight now made everyone think &#8220;If he can do it, I DEFINITELY can&#8221;. You can see now how diverse the underlying dynamics could be, but whatever they were, they worked.  </p>
<p>What is also demonstrated is how suggestible we all are, provided we are given the right suggestion. A stage hypnotist knows only too well how to put the human instinct for suggestibility to work. A stage hypnotist will pick the most highly suggestible subject to perform the first &#8220;trick&#8221; and then work in order from one person to another in accordance with their initial levels of suggestibility. As each person is seen responding to the hypnotist&#8217;s suggestion the following person&#8217;s suggestibility is raised. And so by the end, the least suggestible subject will become as suggestible as the first subject to be picked. That person&#8217;s belief in the hypnotist&#8217;s ability is raised, bit by bit, simply by observing the others reactions.  </p>
<p>The bottom line is that we are all suggestible, given the correct stimulus. I wish I had a dollar for every person who over the years has booked a hypnotherapy session and upon arrival their opening announcement was &#8220;I don&#8217;t know if this will work as I know I&#8217;m not suggestible&#8221;. As a hypnotherapist, my job is to work out what is the right &#8220;hook&#8221; for each person. This job is quite often done before the client arrives; for example, if a heavy smoker has been for a hypnotherapy session and stopped easily, then everyone they tell expects it to work for them, just as if a &#8220;larger&#8221; person has lost a lot of weight encourages everyone else to think that they can do it too.  </p>
<p>And so when asked the question of how suggestible you are, the answer is that you are as suggestible as you want to be. It boils down to expectation and desire. We are all inherently suggestible which is witnessed in the way in which we pick up our native tongue, and learn so many things simply by imitating and copying. We are suggestible in things such as clothing fashion, hair style, and choice of career. Every human being is extraordinarily suggestible!  </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I read an article in the UK press a little while ago which referred to a rather unusual use of hypnosis in the area of weight loss. Most people who have used weight loss hypnosis will be aware that the most usual type of suggestion centers around the changing of habits &#8211; eating more slowly, only eating when seated at a meal table, etc &#8211; with additional suggestions aimed at altering taste preferences and motivation to exercise. This, broadly speaking, is what we are used to in terms of successful weight loss hypnosis. </p>
<p>This article referred to something quite different, although clearly equally effective. The subject was given suggestions not to feel less hungry or to change habits, but instead to believe that they had undergone surgery; to believe that their stomach size had been reduced with the insertion of what is called the &#8220;gastric band&#8221;, so that effectively their stomach size had been reduced and that they could now only eat small meals. They could simply not eat too much &#8211; it is impossible after this type of intervention. </p>
<p>Although the type of suggestion is very different, the result is the same. The subject ate less at meal times and lost weight very effectively. I was not at all surprised at the effectiveness of this suggestion, and was pleased to see that the hypnotherapist in question had adapted the suggestion to suit the clients mind set and had not simply made a &#8220;standard&#8221; set of suggestions. It is important in everything in life to &#8220;think outside the box&#8221;. </p>
<p>Everyone after all comes to therapy with their own unique beliefs and expectations. There is a definite trend towards abrogating responsibility for ones weight gain and desired weight loss. As a community there is a tendency to make justification for weight gain and then to look for an easy answer when one feels &#8220;fat&#8221;. Far more people turn to surgery these days than ever before. And the medical profession answers this &#8220;need&#8221; by creating ever more diverse types of surgical interventions. </p>
<p>One who is overweight tends to first try dieting. These diets are too numerous to cite here, and most people try a good number of them, and sometimes make several attempts at each one. The next step tends to be pills. Again, there are dozens of different weight loss pills, and most people try one or two brands, possibly more, before giving up once again. Then there are the meal replacement systems. And then there are the companies which will provide individually calorie counted meals for you. And then there is surgery, including the gastric band. </p>
<p>It seems to me that the majority of people are disillusioned with &#8220;dieting&#8221; and just go looking for an easier option. Not only do we look for an easy option, we want to see results today, we want to be slim and healthy RIGHT NOW! We haven&#8217;t got time to diet, and we&#8217;ve come to believe that diets don&#8217;t work, or that they are too difficult. It&#8217;s easier to go for surgery and have a gastric band operation and then we just cannot eat too much &#8211; it&#8217;s impossible. And we don&#8217;t have to do anything at all ourselves about our weight. The surgeon is going to do it for us. We have, as I said before, abrogated responsibility, for our dietary choices and resulting weight gain. </p>
<p>Reverting to the recent novel application of hypnotherapy for successful weight loss, the therapist managed to work within the mind set of their client. This client did not want to have to &#8220;work&#8221; at dieting; they just wanted to know that they could not eat very much at any meal. The therapist found a way to do this which the client could relate to, could visualize and imagine. This is the key not only to successful hypnotic suggestion, but also to success at anything in life. The ability to visualize and imagine the end result that you want to achieve is vital to achievement and accomplishment. </p>
