Yo! Yo-Yo Dieters Take a Chill Pill!
If you’d like to take a pill to lose weight – a weight loss pill – seems like there may just be one available that works, after all. And while it’s been the dream of many an overweight person for as long as there have been people, it seems it just may be true after all.
Yes, there actually seems to be a pill that really does help you lose weight. Weight loss, pill. Simple equation.
But what are the real facts about taking a pill and expecting weight loss?
Well, a research study has been done that suggests you can lose about a pound a week if you take this particular weight loss pill. That doesn’t sound spectacular and most dieters are looking for a faster quick fix. But consider this. If you could sustain that weight loss over a full year you’d have lost 52 pounds in weight. That’s a UK 3 stone 10 pounds. That’s a big weight loss by anybody’s standards.
It’s not really a miracle cure, but the research does show it as working. You can buy it without prescription over the counter at places like supermarkets and health food stores. It actually encourages you to eat less by making you feel fuller and slowing down how fast the food stays in your stomach.
Now, if eating less food sounds like your personal idea of hell, you should also know that this herbal pill seems to change how you think about eating – so it won’t be such a big deal to you to eat less. And changing how you think about food is really one of the keys to being successful in weight loss and keeping the weight off.
What’s also very interesting is that in the test done in a research study, the people who lost weight didn’t actually change their diet or exercise routines. And they still lost weight. That bears thinking about for a moment.
They didn’t suddenly start going to the gym for 3 hours a day and they didn’t starve themselves. Doesn’t that sound better than living on rabbit food? And if you want an occasional fast food meal there’s really nothing to stop you. Just keep it in sensible moderation.
With Britain high in the charts for obesity it’s a big problem and it’s getting worse every year. Nearly a quarter of British women are clinically obese, a slightly higher percentage than for British men. That makes us officially the fattest nation in the European Union. Hardly something to celebrate.
Most experts agree that the rising tide of obesity is likely to cause future health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes and even cancers. It’s something that can only really be improved one person at a time. Using a herbal weight loss pill might just do that.
And that makes changing the way you think about food an important step in staying healthy into the forseeable future. The research says that the particular herbal pill tested seems to help with changing your mindset. As any long-term successful weight loss story will record, you have to have the right mindset first in order to succeed with permanent weight loss.
Ask anyone who’s very overweight and they will probably tell you that a lot of the time when they’re eating, it’s not actually because they’re hungry. Sometimes it’s out of boredom and sometimes it’s loneliness, but quite often it really isn’t about hunger.
So for effective weight loss it’s a good idea to change the way you think about food.
The pill seems to trigger a pyschological shift in your reaction to food, by causing the stomach to empty more slowly, making you feel fuller for longer. if you don’t like the idea of using weight loss pills to achieve the result, good old fashioned fibre may have a similar effect.
And for making a change in mindset there are various tools and systems available which can support you in your quest to lose weight and keep it off.
One very effective method of changing your relationship with food and eating is through hypnotherapy. The downside is the ongoing cost and the fact you usually have to travel to they hypnotherapist’s office.
For people who don’t want to do that there are self-help programs available that can help change how you think and react to food.
If you really want success in your weight loss it’s probably worth using a couple of different tools to make sure you get the success you want. Good nutrition, sensible activity, fresh air and fresh food are all basics in the quest for weight loss. Good tools are the icing on the cake.

Ask WHAT Instead of WHY
Every now and then life throws us a curve-ball. This is unavoidable even for the most grounded and successful people. There are a number of causes of frustration and unhappiness, and one of these is the expectation that ‘everything should always go exactly as I want it to go’. Books on the subject of the Law of Attraction would have you believe that you CAN have everything your way all of the time, I’ve never seen this proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. This is not to say that I’m not a fan of the Law of Attraction; on the contrary, I’m a big fan and I use the principles in my every day life. For the most part I am happy. I’m able to create the things I want and I’m living my life on purpose. But like everybody, I have days where I just want to cry out with frustration. We all have those days. The key to getting through them is to let go of your attachment to things being ‘just so’ all of the time. One of the most common questions we can ask ourselves when things aren’t going quite as we had planned is ‘Why?’ This question can often leaves us feeling stuck and defeated, because the answer is usually something we don’t want to hear or acknowledge. The ‘why’ question very often finishes with the phrase ‘I don’t know.’ If they are not used correctly, ‘why’ questions can exacerbate the existing problem rather than assisting us to generate a solution. The ‘why’s are particularly prevalent among my weight loss clients. Here are some of the more disempowering ‘why’ questions: * Why am I doing this?;* Why did he do that to me?;* Why me????’;* Why Can’t I lose this weight? When you ask these kinds of questions you often end up going around in circles. Many of my clients become stuck in victim mentality. They hang onto past hurts and resentments, continually asking ‘Why??’, and continuing to get the same answer. ‘I don’t know’. The truth is it’s likely that most times you will never know the answer to life’s mysteries. Most often we never really discover the real reasons why some things happen to us, so if we allow ourselves to become attached to finding that answer then it only causes more frustration, pain and emptiness. Take weight loss for example. When I conduct the initial weight loss hypnotherapy consultation, I very rarely ask the client to describe her current eating habits. Whatever she’s doing, it’s not working; that’s why she’s come to see me. So from where I’m standing, asking the client about what she is doing now only serves to give the unwanted behavior more power and waste valuable time that could otherwise be used to discuss more positive strategies. Even if I was to engage the client in discussion of her current behavior, she would probably tell me: ‘I don’t know why I do it.’ ‘Danielle’ found herself going around in circles. She was 50 kilos overweight and getting bigger every day. No matter what work we did together, she continued to hang onto her old behaviors. Each session she would earnestly say to me: ‘I don’t know why I keep doing this’. Unfortunately, ‘Danielle’ was looking to me to provide the answer and when I couldn’t, she went away deeming the therapy a ‘failure’. You can’t win’em all. But all was not lost; my experience with ‘Danielle’ inspired me to focus on the solution rather than the problem with my clients. Remember, your subconscious mind gives you whatever you focus on. When focusing on solutions, I like to use ‘what’ questions, such as: * What emotions are you feeling when you overeat?;* What purpose does overeating serve you at the time?;* What specifically are you willing to do differently to change your circumstances? This last question is very important. At the end of the day, ‘Danielle’ continued with her old habits and behaviors because she was not willing to do something different. No amount of hypnosis can help a person who is not willing to change what they are doing. Now, I’m not saying we should never explore the reasons why people overeat and refuse to exercise. Diagnosis is an intrinsic part of my program. What I AM saying is that most times we don’t need to know why we are behaving in a certain way in order to be able to move away from that behavior. We simply need to get ourselves out of that stuck mindset that says ‘because I have always done this in the past, this means I am destined to do it forever.’ So the next time you feel stuck, try a ‘what’ question instead. This will open your mind to creative solutions and inspire you to do something different. Here’s to positive change. Sonia Devine is one of Australia’s leading experts in weight loss hypnotherapy. I read an article in the UK press a little while ago which referred to a rather unusual use of hypnosis in the area of weight loss. Most people who have used weight loss hypnosis will be aware that the most usual type of suggestion centers around the changing of habits – eating more slowly, only eating when seated at a meal table, etc – with additional suggestions aimed at altering taste preferences and motivation to exercise. This, broadly speaking, is what we are used to in terms of successful weight loss hypnosis. This article referred to something quite different, although clearly equally effective. The subject was given suggestions not to feel less hungry or to change habits, but instead to believe that they had undergone surgery; to believe that their stomach size had been reduced with the insertion of what is called the “gastric band”, so that effectively their stomach size had been reduced and that they could now only eat small meals. They could simply not eat too much – it is impossible after this type of intervention. Although the type of suggestion is very different, the result is the same. The subject ate less at meal times and lost weight very effectively. I was not at all surprised at the effectiveness of this suggestion, and was pleased to see that the hypnotherapist in question had adapted the suggestion to suit the clients mind set and had not simply made a “standard” set of suggestions. It is important in everything in life to “think outside the box”. Everyone after all comes to therapy with their own unique beliefs and expectations. There is a definite trend towards abrogating responsibility for ones weight gain and desired weight loss. As a community there is a tendency to make justification for weight gain and then to look for an easy answer when one feels “fat”. Far more people turn to surgery these days than ever before. And the medical profession answers this “need” by creating ever more diverse types of surgical interventions. One who is overweight tends to first try dieting. These diets are too numerous to cite here, and most people try a good number of them, and sometimes make several attempts at each one. The next step tends to be pills. Again, there are dozens of different weight loss pills, and most people try one or two brands, possibly more, before giving up once again. Then there are the meal replacement systems. And then there are the companies which will provide individually calorie counted meals for you. And then there is surgery, including the gastric band. It seems to me that the majority of people are disillusioned with “dieting” and just go looking for an easier option. Not only do we look for an easy option, we want to see results today, we want to be slim and healthy RIGHT NOW! We haven’t got time to diet, and we’ve come to believe that diets don’t work, or that they are too difficult. It’s easier to go for surgery and have a gastric band operation and then we just cannot eat too much – it’s impossible. And we don’t have to do anything at all ourselves about our weight. The surgeon is going to do it for us. We have, as I said before, abrogated responsibility, for our dietary choices and resulting weight gain. Reverting to the recent novel application of hypnotherapy for successful weight loss, the therapist managed to work within the mind set of their client. This client did not want to have to “work” at dieting; they just wanted to know that they could not eat very much at any meal. The therapist found a way to do this which the client could relate to, could visualize and imagine. This is the key not only to successful hypnotic suggestion, but also to success at anything in life. The ability to visualize and imagine the end result that you want to achieve is vital to achievement and accomplishment. Hypnosis is what makes that visualization more effective and allows change to happen more quickly than it would without hypnosis. This is because hypnosis allows access to your subconscious mind, the part which controls instinctive behaviors, beliefs and expectations. When in hypnosis your creative mind is more readily available and your power to visualize is enhanced. The right type of suggestion, combined with vivid visualization is a “heady” combination allowing easy and effective change. If only everyone knew and appreciated the wonderful power of hypnosis, they would not be seeking surgery as a short cut to effective weight loss; they would instead be seeking the help of hypnosis downloads to allow them to unlock the power of their own mind. How to permanently lose weight
I am Irina Benoit and I am a hypnotherapist with LastingChangeHypnosis.ca I want to talk you today about weight loss and why with hypnosis you can lose weight and keep it off effortlessly. You already know how to lose weight. You know that if you eat less and exercise more eventually you’ll see the pounds come off. But if you know that eating less and exercising more will result in weight loss, I have a question for all of you. Why aren’t you thin yet? Why don’t you just do it? What’s getting in your way? If you diet is successful and you lose weight, why do you usually regain the weight that you’ve lost? There are three major things that keep people from achieving and maintaining desired weight. The first thing is the belief that diets are an effective way to achieve permanent weight loss. How many of you have tried a diet? And how many of you have lost weight on that diet? And how many of you that lost weight on the diet and gained the weight back over time!! The weight loss industry in America is over 40 billion dollar a year business. The weight loss industry spends more on marketing then on actual medical research in order to convince people that there are unique diets and pills out there, which will make them thin in absolutely no time. You should know that scientific research has proven that, “diets work for only less then 10% of the population”. Let’s explore why diets don’t work. You already know how to lose weight. You know, that if you eat less and exercise more eventually you’ll see the pounds come off. If you do succeed in losing a little weight with a diet, why do you usually regain the weight you lost? Any diet is perfect set up for failure. Here is why. When we diet, your body goes in survival mode, your metabolism slows down and your body stores more energy in the form of fat for future requirements because the diet is interpreted by the body as scarcity of food. You are hardwired to store energy as fat when food is scarce. This is why camels have a hump? Because Camels live in environments where food is scarce, it stores up energy in the form of fat for future use. These humps help camels survive for weeks without food and water. You and I don’t develop humps on our backs; we store our energy as fat on our thighs, waist, hips etc. Because people on diets ignore the body’s natural signals of real hunger they never feel full – they never get the signal to stop eating. The parts of the brain that control appetite and satiety are linked together With dieting we don’t pay attention to the signals of real hunger coming from the appetite center that says “Find Food and eat it”, then we are (doomed) conditioned to stay unaware of the signals coming from the center of satiety, saying “Stop eating. I am full”. This leads to ravings and binge eating and overeating. 1. The more you try dieting the more you convince yourself that you are not able to loose weight. Your self-esteem goes down, you feel even more out of control and you reach for another candy or peace of pie to fix yourself. We can’t become healthy if we are focused on illness, we can’t become abundant if we are focusing on poverty and we can’t have a slim and thin body if we obsessed with food. 2. No diet can help you to control WHY you eat what you eat. Diets don’t help you to deal with the feelings of being out of control, hopeless, helpless, sadness, fears, anger and worry…This is why you have failed in the past. Diets fail because diet can’t stop emotional eating, the number one reason why you have been overweight in the past. Most of the overweight people are driven to overeat by EMOTIONS. In fact, experts estimate that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions. The second thing that keeps people from achieving and maintaining their desired weight is Emotional eating. Ask yourself if you are an emotional Eater? Do you eat to avoid dealing with what’s really bothering you? Do you eat when you are not really hungry but to change your mood or the way you feel? When you’re bored or upset do you turn to food? Emotional eaters have become addicted to food. Stopping emotional eating is about successfully managing emotions and mood and not about providing food for your body. Your eating habits are developed over time and your relationship to food becomes hardwired in your subconscious mind. You may be first put on weight as a result of the trauma or stressful time in your life. You began to use food to comfort yourself, to help yourself to go through the difficult times. It could be a time of your fistsecond pregnancy, separation, divorce that has happened few years ago. You may be first put on weight as a result of being humiliated by comment of your pears or a family member in your childhood. Weight gain could be a result of the sexual andor emotional abuse in the past. If you’re struggling with emotional eating and can’t choose to eat less and exercise more, you can’t lose weight. It’s that simple. In other words, unless you can learn to stop emotional eating, you will never be able to lose weight and keep it off. Period. Your weight is not about what you eat. It is rather about what eats you. The source of emotions is in your subconscious mind. The problem is in your subconscious mind and the solutions are there too. The third thing that keeps people from achieving and maintaining their desired weight is Faulty Mental Programming. There are three primary pathways to subconscious learning; repetition, association and emotion. This is how the subconscious mind sorts out needed information and initiates certain behaviors and habits. 1. The more often we experience negative thoughtsfeelings the more often we repeat a behavior, the more likely we will repeat it, as the subconscious mind makes an easy pathway to it. This is how we create a habit. 2. When the behavior is associated with other events, or sensory cues, those events or cues can become triggers for the behavior. All of those events and sensory cues are coming from the past. Association links them to our present experience. That’s why when most people sit down and turn on the TV, they automatically feel like snacking. This is why we begin to look (crave) for foods when we are stressed, upset, insecure, angry, afraid, and sad, bored, anxious, trapped, ashamed or lonely. 3. Emotions can access dynamic and powerful mind-body resources. Isn’t it true that your most distant memories are brought forth by emotion? The part of the human nature (the nature of you subconscious mind) is to reject negative thought and emotion. We reject negative thoughtsemotions by suppressing, denying, avoiding and ignoring them. We have trained to avoid negative thoughtsemotions since we have been kids. Who wants to feel rejected, unloved, not good enough, insecure or fearful? We have never knew how to let those thoughts and emotions go. Now we are no longer experiencing pain, hurt and discomfort that original event and negative emotion have cased us in the past. But those thoughts and emotions are still running inside of us. Now, they are running in the subconscious mind. We are now not aware of them consciously, but they are leading us to do things in order to get rid of them. And before we know, we may find ourselves reaching out for a next candy or chocolate bar, another bag of cookies or just another meal in effort to comfort, to reward or to calm yourself with the easiest way you have found, with Foods. Being unsatisfied within our own mind we are looking for instant gratification. We are now using food as a crutch to bring a sense of comfort or satisfaction, securitysafety or feeling of being loved or accepted back into your life. Emotional eating is the practice of consuming food in response to feelings instead of hunger. The following behaviors originate in the subconscious mind. They arise out of the relationship with food. But they have nothing to do with the food. This is why will power doesn’t work when it comes to emotional eating. Vicious Cycle of Faulty Mental Programming Trying repetitively but failing to keep weight off, Feeling out of control when eating, Eating when not hungry, Binge eating of unhealthy foods, Late night eating, Thinking about food often, Sabotaging good feelings and weight loss attempts, Turning to foods when you stressed, upset, angry, bored, frustrated, afraid or anxious, Turning to foods to comfort you or to reward yourself, Eating after you feel full, Feel guilty after a food binge. Your will power comes from the conscious mind. It is limited to its own resources. It uses logic, it is analytical and good at planning things but when it comes to emotions, the conscious mind has no proper resources to address and to deal with them. Hypnosis takes you back to the Conscious Eating by reprogramming your subconscious mind and letting go of negative feelings and unproductive habits. Solution 1. Weight Loss is not about controlling what you eat, it is about human biology. Eating is under control of your brain. Just like sleeping. Nothing can override the basic programming of the brain. When you were a baby most likely you didn’t have problems with weight. You slept when you were tired and you ate when you were hungry and you stopped when you felt full. 2. The solution to Weight Loss is in changing a response to the signals we receive from the brain. The key is in paying attention to the normal reflexes of the body, the signals of hunger. Not suppressing them, but rather paying attention to them, listening to your body rather then ignoring it, responding in a healthy way to those signals of hunger, rather then avoiding them. Our brain contains a hunger center and satiety center. The hunger center tells you to find food and eat it. The satiety center makes you feel full, enables you to forget about food. In the past, you have trained yourself to ignore avoid the signals of hunger your brain sending you. For as long as you don’t pay attention to the signals of hunger you will not be able to recognize the signals of fullness and satisfaction. 3. This is how Hypnosis can help you to lose weight. Hypnosis effectively taps into your mind’s own ability to turn negative thoughts and feelings into empowering and beneficial emotions and behaviors. Hypnotherapy is a process of creating a deep state of relaxation. You are alert, attentive and in control. You are just deeply relaxed and we reprogram the old messages rooted in the subconscious mind that cause depression. Your subconscious mind accepts these suggestions and your behaviors change accordingly. 1. With Hypnosis you will retrain yourself to pay attention to your normal natural reflexes, the messages you receive from your subconscious mind. You will pay attention to the signals of hunger and because of it you will find yourself stopping eating when you feel comfortably full. You will find that you eat less being more satisfied with less amount of food in your stomach. In Hypnosis you will be able to face those feelingsthoughts you were trying to avoid before. You will process them and you will let them go. 2. You will reeducate yourself on how to deal with any negative feelingthought may arise in a future in a new healthy way. In a such a way that you will be able to process and let go of any negative feeling or thought without avoiding them, without suppressing them inside. You will let go of fears, doubts and insecurities. You will find yourself being in control when it comes to emotions. As a result of it you will find yourself in control when it comes to foods. So that you are in control of when you eat, what you eat and how much you eat. 4. You are no longer need to compensate those trapped negative feelings and thoughts by overeating. As you are no longer need to comfort yourself in order to modulate your mood. 5. Food cravings were just massages from your brain. You brain wanted you to feel good. Food cravings will disappear. 6. Now you feel good from inside. You can give yourself a comfort, support, love, and acceptance and reward yourself with the true Feeling Good feeling without reaching for foods. Before you notice that pounds of extra weight are melting away, you will find that you are no longer obsessed with your weight. 7. Your body image will begin to change as a direct result of the changes in your self-image. You will begin to look at food only as a fuel for your body. You will eat when you hungry and stop when you full. You will be aware of when you eat, what you eat and how you eat. You will find yourself thinking more positively about yourself, wanting to make right choices and taking the right steps to improve yourself. You now find yourself wanting to get better, slimmer and healthier because YOU LIKE YOURSELF. One day you will look at yourself in the mirror. Having lost all those excess pounds – looking slimmer, firmer, toned and glowing with health and vitality. You will enjoy noticing, how what you wearing looks so good on your wonderful, slim body. Your body now meets with your own approval and you are so glad that you cut the link between those negative feelingsthoughts and eating. 8. You will develop a truly Healthy Life Style. You begin to make choices that are beneficial to you. You put dieting and self- sabotage behind you. Your desire to get better and the motivation to loose weight, to stay active and to think positive will come naturally. You will find yourself thinking healthy thoughts and automatically reaching for healthy food. You will find that you have more energy, more vitality and you begin to exercise more – you really enjoy using your body – and the more you use it the better you feel. And this is the biggest gift you could ever give yourself. The gift of freedom to feel good, to look good and think positively that will never go away. Because that change you have created has come from within. 9. We have a hefty problem with obesity in this part of the world. More and more people are trying to lose weight and more are finding it harder and harder to achieve lasting results.
Too Many Diets
There are so many diets or regimes to chose from and of course all of them promise fantastic results. The willing but hapless dieter, who switches from one to another looking for quick and easy results can soon feel a failure when all the weight invariably piles back on or never disappears in the first place.
The plain truth is that many diets do little more than make money for the people who invented them. The real reason why most diets lead to failure is that they rely solely on restricting food intake. As anyone knows who’s embarked on a diet or breaking a habit the moment that you know you can’t have a certain food or something that becomes the only thing on your mind.
Dieting Frustration
Very soon a sense of panic or irritation ensues and your thoughts centre entirely on the very thing you want to avoid. Not much fun. Studies show that in fact around 95% of all people who lose weight through dieting alone subsequently put it all back on.
Successful weight loss.
So what is the right way to succeed?
Well my clients all receive the same advice from me. That is to use their mind to create the ideal future version of their lighter self. That’s the key to create lasting motivation to get what you want especially if you want to be slimmer and lighter.
For example I worked with a client recently who was a professional in her mid-thirties. On the outside she had everything going for her. A loving relationship, a great career and social life. But on the inside her mind was focussed on her failure to lose weight permanently. She was in a trap of yo-yo dieting and trying every slimming fad or diet in the news, only to lose weight and then put it back on plus extra. She felt at her wits end.So when she came to me I asked her to tell me what was it going to be like for her to have lost weight and be exactly how she want to be. Well this threw her for a few moments and she sat in silence. Then rattled off all the things that she’d avoid; such as not having to go to out-sized clothes stores; not having to struggle with which food to eat or not, not having to eat secretly etc, etc.
I explained to her that this thinking meant her mind had to focus on the negative scenario first and that meant that’s where her mind would go whenever she launched on a new diet. I taught her how to train her mind to support her goal. First of all I showed her how to really let her imagination go and see and feel in her mind’s eye just what she’d be like when she had succeeded with her dream. To make sure it was working for her I asked her to include all her senses so that she’d know what she’d be doing, with whom, what will others would be saying to her.
This is a very useful NLP (neuro linguistic programming) strategy that I use and it really helps the mind create the right mental pathways and self-images that means clients begin to positively enjoy the task of losing weight. Then with hypnotherapy we further embed these images and new self beliefs so that new habits around food, eating and exercise can take root and become the norm.
Using this approach means clients usually see me for an initial three sessions and then depending on how much weight they want to lose, only need to see me for monthly back up sessions.
If you want to try this method start by writing out what you want positively as an outcome. By that I mean don’t focus on what you don’t want to happen. Use the above description to guide you. It’s important that you get this bit right because you’re giving your mind instructions to carry out.
Keep this written outcome handy so that you can refer to it and build on it. It can become a symbol for your mind to use to help you get what you want.
Using this method and some other strategies that we worked on together my client has lost over three stone. See what you can do when you put your mind to it. http://www.rocketspanishorbust.com
Weight Loss – are You Fighting With yourself to Lose Weight?
Have you tried to lose weight in the past but failed? You may have been fighting yourself to do it. I’ll explain. There are two main parts to our mind: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious part of you wants to lose weight and look good this upcoming season. Meanwhile, the subconscious wants you to continue to eat all the foods that make you feel comfortable and happy. Unfortunately for you, those tend to be composed of sugar and carbohydrates which only make your waist line grow. In a scenario like this one, the person ends up yo-yo-dieting because their “Will Power” can only last so long – literally. Will Power only gives you a short burst of energy. Once it’s gone. It’s just gone. The only thing left behind is your emotional stress and frustration which can lead to a vicious cycle of weight rebounding. That is the reason why the problem of losing weight needs to be tackled at the source of where the mental conflict is – in your subconscious. The subconscious is where all your habits and patterns lie such as not eating healthy, not liking to exercise and drinking only soda. Once you get this part of your mind in sink with your goals, change becomes easy because you’re no longer fighting with yourself. Hypnosis Has Been Scientifically Proven To Work For Weight Loss. Setting your mind to lose weight and motivating yourself to enjoy healthy habits is possible with Hypnosis. A significant number of studies (several of which are listed below), have demonstrated that adding hypnosis to a weight loss program significantly increases its success. A 1996 study conducted at the University of Connecticut published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that, on average, people who used Hypnosis were able to lose 2.5 times more weight than a person not using Hypnosis. The authors went a step further by stating, “The correlation analysis indicated that the benefits of Hypnosis increased substantially over time.” As someone who previously battled with keeping extra pounds off, I know that you need to have the correct frame of mind in order to be successful. You may have experienced occasions when you’ve dieted and exercised but then your will power wore off. In the end, you slipped back to your old patterns and rebounded in weight. This continuous vicious cycle affects you not just physically but emotionally because as your self-esteem spirals downwards you start to overeat; you start eating calorie laden comfort foods again and you get stuck in the same pattern. This scenario happens to countless of Americans who fuel the diet industry with their purchases of diet pills and other fads in hope of achieving their weight loss goals. The problem, however, is that the more you rebound, the more you set yourself up for failure for the next time you try to diet. In reality, the perfect equation for most people to lose weight is simple. It’s: Weight Loss = The Right Mind Set + Healthy Eating + Exercise That’s it. In life as in science, the simplest answer is often the correct answer. Hypnosis can help you achieve the right state of mind by “cleaning up the mental clutter” that prevents you from holding a determined course to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. It gives you the ability to naturally chose to eat healthy foods, to want to exercise and to be focused on achieving your weight loss goals. For some, it’s as simple as one session, while others see benefit from a series of sessions. In a research article titled, Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment, a group of researchers found that in a test group of 60 participants, those that did not use Hypnosis only lost .5 lbs while the group using Hypnosis lost 17lbs. Why? Because the people who had access to Hypnosis sessions were able to achieve that weight loss combination that eludes most people today. More proof of the ability of Hypnosis to boost a person’s weight loss was shown in January of 2004, when Dateline aired “Losing it: Dateline ultimate diet challenge.” The show compared some of the most well known methods known to losing weight including the Atkin’s diet, Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, extreme exercise with calorie restrictions, working with a diet coach and Hypnosis. The top two weight loss techniques that worked were Hypnosis and the Atkins diet. Unfortunately for the man who used the Atkin’s diet (Rick Burns), while he lost weight, he also became sick. “Rick developed a painful case of gout, a condition he’d had before, that he suspected was a result of the diet.” His diet had to be modified. Marc Merlis, the man who did Hypnosis along with exercising and eating healthy continued to happily lose weight. “After three months under Hypnosis, his wife had a nickname for him. Incredibly, “droopy drawers” had lost the most so far, a staggering 40 pounds. That’s when droopy’s wife got in on the action. She went to the hypnotist to quit smoking. And guess what? Smoke free, fat free. Five months in, for the Merlis’s things couldn’t be better. And at their son’s bar mitzvah this May, lifting Marc was a piece of cake.” As long as Marc continued his Hypnosis routine, he was able to continue his path of losing weight. One of the things that I noticed about this weight loss challenge was how much the other contestants suffered by the calorie restrictions that they had to undergo. It’s hard to focus if you feel that you are starving. Hypnosis helps program your mind to think thin – this includes wanting to exercise and wanting to eat healthy so you’re not constantly struggling about what choices you have to make. An added plus to Hypnosis is that it helps you control your stress levels. This in turn helps you to lose weight. Even highly respected consumer advocate John Stossel of ABC’s 20/20, who is known for debunking fraudulent claims, agrees that Hypnosis is no sham. In his best-selling book, “Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidty”, he makes a bold take on Hypnosis: “Just when my skeptic’s antennae convince me I always know bunk when I see it, I get fooled. I assumed hypnosis in medicine was one more con game… “Hypnotherapy will help you lose weight!” C’mon, if it worked, there wouldn’t be all those overweight people around. Truth: Hypnosis works — if you let it!” Smokers can also reap the benefits of Hypnosis for weight loss. A two-fold study stated that both nonsmokers and smokers alike experienced significant weight loss as well as decline in their Body Mass Index compared to the group who did not practice Hypnosis. In fact, the group who used Hypnosis continued to show lower post treatment weights. Non-invasive and relaxing, Hypnosis makes achieving your goals easy. Hypnosis simply allows you to have better motivation and self control as well as a positive emotional association with your diet and exercise. You don’t just lose weight, you gain control of your own life, so that you can go out there and achieve all the other things that are on your list of goals. The 4 Enemies of Weight Loss
If you want to know how to lose weight and keep it off, then you need the right tools. A sensible eating regime and regular exercise will get you part of the way there. But if you really want to manage your weight long term, you also need to be aware of the pitfalls. Why do some people struggle so badly with their weight? In my experience as a therapist, there are 4 significant elements that hinder weight loss:One: Your BeliefsWhatever you believe to be true about yourself creates your reality. You may have heard about this concept many times in books and other resources that talk about the law of attraction. Your subconscious mind acts as a filtering system which brings into your direct awareness everything that supports your beliefs to the exclusion of everything else. How can your beliefs cause weight problems? Well, consider this: Do you believe you are lazy? If so, do you believe this because you are lazy, or are you simply lazy because you believe it?The answer is the latter. In fact the perception that one is lazy or weak-willed is a very common belief, and one that has stopped many of my clients from managing their weight. So how do you change beliefs that cause you to self-sabotage? Firstly, you need to become aware of what yours are. On a piece of paper, write down: ‘I can’t lose weight because…’ and then list all of the reasons. By bringing these beliefs into conscious awareness, you can imagine letting them go by using visualization. Two: Your PastYour past relationships, situations and circumstances greatly impact your present circumstances, including your ability to lose weight. Let’s say you are carrying a lot of hurt and resentment about circumstances or people from your past. When you think about these people you start to feel angry or resentful. This takes up a whole lot of physical and mental energy. On the surface, it might feel as though you are simply too tired to exercise or cannot find the motivation to eat properly; but what is really happening is that your subconscious energy is consumed by these negative feelings and thoughts. The result is that any positive energy that could have been used to help you do the things you must do is simply not available. If you want to lose weight permanently, begin by letting go of negative energy. Meditate on forgiveness. As you heal your emotions, you will heal your body.Three: Your Present CircumstancesWhat causes you stress? Do you say yes to others when you should be looking after yourself? Maybe you are struggling to maintain your ground in a toxic relationship. All of these elements affect your hormone levels and in turn, your metabolism. The key to sustainable weight loss is finding new ways to be happier. This starts with creating life balance. Do you work too much? Perhaps you believe doing this will set you up for that one magic day in the future when you will finally be happy. The problem with this theory is that when you devote all of your energy to just one element of your life (such as work, health or relationship), many other areas can suffer. Happiness experts call this ‘uni-dimensional living’. Don’t fall into the trap of believing that you can neglect one area of your life in favor of another. This will only cause you to feel tired, frustrated and dis-empowered. Balance is the key.Four: Subconscious Pay-OffsWhat are you gaining from holding onto your excess weight? Maybe you are encountering a power struggle with someone who nags you to do something about your weight. On one hand, you do want to eat better and become fit and healthy; on the other hand, another part of you hates the idea of making this other person ‘right’ by doing all the things they are telling you that you ’should’ be doing. This is just one of the many examples of subconscious pay-offs that keep people from achieving permanent weight loss.Whenever you are not doing the things that you know you consciously want to do, it is usually because the subconscious pay-off for staying at your current weight is greater than the subconscious pay-off for changing. How do you know what yours are? Start by taking a blank sheet of paper. At the head of the page, write down: “If I lost weight…’. Now allow your mind to think of any negative thoughts that may come into your head. Once you know what they are, you can eradicate them. Self-awareness is the key to all things in life, and we as human beings are free to choose what we believe. So choose to believe that you CAN! The other day one of my clients said to me: ‘I have a friend who tried hypnotherapy for weight loss, but it didn’t work for her.’ She was wondering why some people seemed to respond to weight loss hypnotherapy, while others did not. I explained to her that not all hypnotherapy is equal; that some therapists focus very strongly on eliminating the symptoms of being overweight, which are usually overeating, lack of motivation to exercise, sugar/fat addiction and alcohol addiction.
Many people believe that their eating patterns are simply habit, and that hypnotherapy can help them to break that habit. In some cases this is true. But in many cases, the overeating is serving a purpose. Sometimes it alleviates anxiety. Sometimes it provides comfort. It may even serve to numb emotional pain. Whatever the case, it is not the vice that is the problem, but the need for the vice.
This is not to say we should ignore the symptoms of being overweight. These are definitely part of the problem and they need to be addressed; but if you treat the symptom without addressing the cause, it’s like trying to heal an infected sore with a bandaid. It will not work; or at best, it will work only for a short while, and then the symptoms will return; usually even more rampant than before. This is essentially why dieting doesn’t work. When you go on a diet, you are looking for a short term fix (whether you know it or not), and you’re not addressing the real issue, which is your attitude towards food.
In fact, food restriction sometimes exacerbates the problem because when you decide to reduce your food intake, you may find yourself becoming fixated on food, preparation of food and what you are going to eat for your next meal. By trying to eat less food, you are focusing on food and therefore creating a paradox. It’s kind of like saying ‘Don’t think of an Elephant!’ So instead of trying ‘not’ to eat certain foods, try in stead to focus on changing your eating habits.
Some time ago, ‘Carolyn’ came to me for help with her addiction to jelly-lollies (or ‘candy’ if you’re not an Aussie). She explained that some months ago, she had seen another hypnotherapist for her addiction to chocolate. This had worked brilliantly, she told me. Almost instantaneously, ‘Carolyn’ lost her desire for chocolate. The only problem was, now she was addicted to the lollies. And this, she figured, was where I would come in to save the day.
Apparently I was to use my magic to remove ‘Carolyn’s addiction to jelly-lollies. At this stage, she had done no real self-exploration; she figured she had a bad habit and I was going to help her eliminate the habit. I suspected there may be an underlying cause of this problem which contributed to my client’s need to binge on one specific food type; and on further investigation, there was. Quite simply, ‘Carolyn’ was her own worst enemy.
A relentless exercise addict and perfectionist, she was unhappy with her body, her mind and her soul. I might add that the woman before me was a beautiful, slim, fit and intelligent lady; only she did not see what I could see. I knew it was useless trying to convince her that she was a beautiful, normal and healthy woman. In every light she perceived herself as unacceptable, and that was that.
Nonetheless, I told ‘Carolyn’ that I didn’t believe she had a weight problem; rather that she had a serious body image and self esteem problem. This was manifesting itself in extreme self-punishment and food restriction followed by bingeing on ‘forbidden’ foods. ‘Carolyn’ pleaded with me to try the therapy anyway. She explained that I was her last resort, and that she was at the end of her tether. She was absolutely convinced that if she could just stop eating the lollies, everything would fall into place.
Against my better judgment (this was in my earlier days of practise), I did the therapy with her….and guess what??? She stopped eating jelly-lollies! Soon afterwards she began bingeing on health bars. The moral of the story? Too much of anything is a bad thing. If you remove the vice without addressing the underlying issues that contribute to the need for the undesired behaviour, this will simply result in you taking up another vice. Work from the inside out and you will get a much better result. Sonia Devine is one of Australia’s leading experts in weight loss hypnotherapy.
